The brief

The brief asked for a three-minute film and a 30-second vertical teaser. Its notes began: "Create a fast-paced but natural travel vlog from this footage. Follow the journey chronologically: driving and arrival, village atmosphere, mountain scenery, river and waterfalls, food stops, walking and exploring, then finish with the strongest scenic moments." Music: use what was recorded on the day, if any.

What went in

Clive and Dominic are the Goat Trotter travel vloggers, and this film follows one of their trips.

The footage was 47 video clips and 20 photos, 29.9 minutes and 0.8 GB in all. Every clip was landscape, 1280×720 and recorded with sound, 46 of them at 30 frames per second and one at 24. The camera is named in 19 of the 67 files, all as an Apple iPhone 15, and the other 48 don't record one. None of the 47 clips was set aside as unusable.

Changing it in plain English

PhotographerAdd Clive's line 'I was very moved by the War Museum yesterday' right after the war poster to deepen that moment.

AfterRushesI've added Clive's line 'I was very moved by the War Museum yesterday' straight after the war poster, so the two moments now play together. Everything else is unchanged, and the film is about three and a half seconds longer.

Photographerthis was made for 3mins, can we extend to 12 minutes?

AfterRushesI've extended the film to about 11 and three-quarter minutes. The structure, opening hook and ending are the same, and it still follows the trip in order. I added the Danger Side graffiti walk, more of the old town (the fountain, the shiny-plates shop and the bazaar), the full Medjugorje walk, a new night section with Dominic's 'death or a thousand handshakes' bar story, the Blagaj drive and boat-cave chat, the full Kravice banter, the hotel and room tour, Dominic's background interview and the full farewell reflections, with cutaways throughout.

The music

No music was recorded on the trip and none was supplied, so the film plays on the sound recorded with the clips.

Technical details

The film has no soundtrack. No music was recorded on the trip and none was supplied, so it plays on the sound recorded with the clips. The AI's note on it read: "Add a light, upbeat acoustic track under the film, since no music was supplied or recorded on the day." AfterRushes can use a band or DJ recorded on the day, or the photographer's own licensed track. Music for wedding films covers both.

Hundreds of clips from the road. The edit hasn't started. AfterRushes has. It keeps what you say to camera, cuts the views over the top, and adds the captions. Card in. Episode out.

Film a week, edit a week A short video made from this film, about the week of editing that follows a week of filming. 0:19

You film for a week, then edit for a week. Not anymore. AfterRushes finds the stories, keeps your best lines and cuts the episode and the short while you unpack. Card in. Episode out.

What it didn’t do

  • No soundtrack. No music was recorded on the trip and none was supplied.
  • Not quite 12 minutes. The request was for 12 minutes and the film runs 11:56.
  • A preview teaser. The teaser here is a 540×960 preview and hasn't had its final render. AfterRushes exports teasers at 1080×1920.
  • 720p footage. Every clip was 1280×720, so the 1920×1080 film can't show more detail than the clips hold.
  • The final say. As with a wedding, the AI makes the first cut and you review it and make it yours. Here, the note about the floodlit Old Bridge photo is still waiting for that review.

Questions about this film

How long did AfterRushes take to make this film?

This build wasn't timed, so there is no figure for it. How long AfterRushes takes depends on the amount of footage and the computer, and the work runs in the background.

What did the AI cost for this film?

The AI cost to date for this project is $2.21, across 71 calls to the AI, including the changes asked for. Costs vary with the footage, and with a full film you pay Anthropic directly through your own Claude key.

Was the footage uploaded?

No. The video files never left the computer, and speech was transcribed there too. Still frames from each clip, the photos and the transcript go to the AI (Anthropic's Claude) to plan the film.

Can the AI's first cut be changed?

Yes. You can change it on the timeline or ask the Assistant in plain English, and only the shots that changed re-render. Here, the AI's first cut ran roughly three and a quarter minutes, and after a request to extend it to 12 minutes the film as rendered runs 11:56.

Why does the film have no music?

No music was recorded on the trip and none was supplied. AfterRushes can use a band or DJ recorded on the day, or the photographer's own licensed track.
