The brief

The brief asked for a three-minute highlight film in the cinematic style and a 30-second vertical teaser, with no speeches edit. Its written note set out the route. "Build a clear visual journey through the property, beginning with exterior establishing shots, then moving naturally through the architecture, rooms, details, terraces and sea views", it said, and "Prioritise the strongest, smoothest and best-exposed footage, avoid repetitive angles, and use movement to connect spaces". Music: use what was recorded on the day, if any.

What went in

Villa Bighi is a historic venue in Malta. AfterRushes read 40 video clips and 4 photos from a shoot there, 11.3 minutes of footage and 5.0 GB in all. Every clip was landscape, at 1920×1080 and 50 frames per second. A DJI Osmo Pocket is named in 4 of the files, and the other 40 don't record a camera.

What the AI noticed

  • Title suggestion
Change the end card to 'Villa Bighi · Kalkara, Malta' to name the location more precisely.
  • Suggested addition
Add the courtyard doorway still photo (DJI_0672) as a slow-zoom shot in the Stone courtyards section.
  • Suggested addition
Include the slow ceiling tilt in the white gallery hall (DJI_0658) to show the event space's lighting rails.
  • Story decision
…moves through the limestone courtyards and doorways into the villa's rooms and details, then out onto the dome terrace, the gardens and the harbour views, and closes back on the villa's facade.

The music

No music was recorded on the day and none was supplied, so the film has no soundtrack, and as the clips have no sound, it plays silent. Given a licensed track of your own, AfterRushes finds its beats and cuts the film to them.

Technical details

There is no soundtrack. No music was recorded on the day of the shoot and no track was supplied. The film as AfterRushes made it has no sound at all, with no music and no speech or sound from the clips. The teaser is silent too.

The brief asked for "cuts that follow the music", and this film had no music for its cuts to follow. AfterRushes uses a band or DJ recorded on the day as the soundtrack when the recording is clean enough, or the photographer's own licensed track. This shoot had neither, so the soundtrack is the photographer's to choose.

What it didn’t do

  • It's shorter than asked. The brief asked for three minutes, and the film runs 2:51.
  • It has no sound. Neither the film nor the teaser has music, speech or sound from the clips.
  • The teaser shown is a preview. It's a 540×960 preview of the teaser, and it runs 0:32 against the 30 seconds asked.
  • The AI's suggestions aren't in it. The closing title reads "Malta", and the courtyard photo and the gallery hall ceiling tilt are left out.
  • The AI made the first cut. Before the film is shared, the photographer would still watch it through, choose a licensed track, decide on the AI's open suggestions and trim, move or retitle anything that doesn't suit, on the timeline or by asking in plain English in the Assistant.

Questions about this film

How long did this film take to make?

We didn't time this build, so we can't give a figure. How long AfterRushes takes varies with the amount of footage and the computer, and the work runs in the background.

What did the AI cost?

The app has recorded $0.78 of AI use on this project to date, across 45 calls to the AI. The AI cost of other projects varies with the amount of footage. For full films, photographers pay Anthropic directly with their own Claude key.

Was the footage uploaded?

No. The video and audio files, the edit and the finished films stay on the computer that made them. To plan the film, AfterRushes sends still frames from each clip, the photos and any transcript to the AI (Anthropic's Claude).

Can the film still be changed?

Yes. The AI made the first cut, and the photographer can delete, move and trim shots on the timeline, change titles, use the AI's one-click suggestions or ask for changes in plain English in the Assistant. Only the shots that changed re-render.

Why is the film silent?

No music was recorded on the day and none was supplied, and no speech or sound from the clips is in the film. AfterRushes uses a band or DJ recorded on the day as the soundtrack when the recording is clean enough, or the photographer's own licensed track.
